Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 is an iron-lactoferrin supplement with 21 mg of iron per capsule. It combines different forms of iron with lactoferrin and is suitable for people in whom an iron requirement has been confirmed. Correct intake, spacing from coffee, tea and calcium, and monitoring iron values, for example ferritin, before and while you supplement iron are particularly important.

Many people look for a simple solution for daily iron intake. With iron, however, the following applies: do not take it long term on suspicion. Iron supplements should only be used when there is a confirmed need – ideally after iron values have been determined and professionally assessed.

What is Biogena QuattroFerrin®21?

Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 provides 21 mg of iron per capsule. The formula contains different forms of iron and lactoferrin. The pack contains 60 vegan capsules.

Good to know: Iron contributes to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin. Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body. Iron contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Iron contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

These functions relate to the nutrient iron. Whether supplementation makes sense for you depends not only on symptoms or diet, but above all on laboratory values, eating habits, menstruation, sporting activity and individual tolerance.

Composition: forms of iron plus lactoferrin

The product combines different forms of iron in one capsule. The product information also lists lactoferrin as an ingredient. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that occurs naturally in certain body fluids; in the product, it is part of the formula.

For practical purposes, the dose is easy to classify: one capsule provides 21 mg of iron. This is significantly more than the amount usually obtained from a single food portion and should therefore not be taken additionally without a reason.

Foods remain the basis. Iron-conscious meals can, for example, look like this:

  • Oatmeal breakfast: 50 g oats with berries and 1 tablespoon of pumpkin seeds.
  • Lunch: 150 g lentil or chickpea salad with peppers, parsley and lemon juice.
  • Dinner: wholegrain bread with hummus, plus raw vegetables such as peppers or kohlrabi.
  • With a mixed diet: a portion of meat or fish according to your personal way of eating, combined with vegetables and potatoes or a wholegrain side dish.

Vitamin C-rich foods such as peppers, citrus fruits, berries, kiwi or broccoli go well with iron-containing meals. Practical examples include a glass of orange juice with a lentil dish or pepper strips with wholegrain bread.

Intake in everyday life: timing, combinations, routine

The specific recommended intake on the packaging should always be followed. Many people tolerate iron better when they choose a fixed routine: in the morning after getting up, during the morning between two meals, or in the evening with sufficient distance from certain drinks and minerals.

If you react sensitively, taking it with a small meal may be more suitable for everyday life. Then note how you take the capsule and whether you notice any changes in tolerance. This makes it easier during counselling to identify which routine suits you.

Typical intake mistakes

  • Coffee directly with it: Coffee should not be taken immediately together with iron. Plan an interval if possible, for example two hours.
  • Black or green tea directly with it: Tea is also not an ideal companion for the iron capsule. Water is the simplest choice.
  • Calcium at the same time: Calcium-rich supplements or very calcium-rich meals should be taken at a separate time. If you supplement calcium, a different time of day often works better. You can find more basics in the article on the topic of calcium.
  • Combining several supplements without checking: Multivitamins, mineral blends and iron supplements can overlap. Check the labels.
  • Iron long term without monitoring: Long-term intake should not take place without renewed laboratory values.

A simple example: If you drink coffee in the morning and eat a dairy product at lunchtime, the iron capsule with water in the late morning may fit better into your daily routine. Those who do well taking it on an empty stomach in the morning can choose to take it directly after getting up and drink coffee later.

Coffee, tea and calcium: sensible intervals

Coffee and tea contain plant compounds that can interact with iron in the digestive tract. It therefore makes sense not to take iron with espresso, filter coffee, black tea, green tea or mate. Water is neutral and the least complicated option in everyday life.

Calcium can also play a role when taken at the same time. This mainly refers to calcium tablets, high-dose mineral combinations or very calcium-rich meals directly with the iron capsule. If you use a calcium supplement in the morning, it is better to place iron at another time.

Practical guidance:

  • Take the iron capsule with a large glass of water.
  • If possible, do not drink coffee and tea directly before or after.
  • Use calcium supplements at a separate time.
  • If taking several food supplements, create an intake plan.

An intake plan prevents supplements from coinciding unfavourably. This is especially helpful if magnesium, calcium, zinc, multivitamins or medicines are also being taken. For medicines, you should always have intervals clarified by a doctor or at the pharmacy.

Have ferritin checked: why a laboratory view is important

Ferritin is a commonly used laboratory value for assessing iron stores. Depending on the situation, haemoglobin, transferrin saturation, CRP or other values are also considered. Individual values should not be interpreted in isolation, because signs of inflammation, cycle, diet, blood loss or intensive exertion can influence the assessment.

Before intake, it is useful to determine iron values. After an agreed supplementation period, it can be checked again whether the supply fits your situation. Laboratory tests provide indications and do not replace a medical diagnosis. If results are abnormal or symptoms persist, you should consult a doctor.

People who are already taking iron, combine several supplements or have had abnormal iron values in the past should be particularly attentive. During pregnancy, breastfeeding, heavy menstruation, a vegan diet or intensive sporting activity, individual assessment is also useful.

If tiredness is an issue in everyday life, various factors may be involved. You can find a broader overview in the post Constant tiredness despite sleep. However, it also does not replace personal assessment.

For whom can counselling be useful?

Nutritional counselling is helpful if you would like to understand your laboratory values, are unsure about intake or combine several food supplements. Often it is not just about one capsule, but about the entire daily routine: breakfast with coffee, iron-containing foods, calcium sources, medicines, cycle, training and tolerance.

Ideally, bring current laboratory values, a list of your supplements and medicines, and a short food diary covering three to five days to the counselling session. Also note when you use coffee, tea, dairy products or mineral supplements. This makes it possible to create a realistic plan for your everyday life.

Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 should be kept out of reach of children. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 and when does taking it make sense?

Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 provides 21 mg of iron per capsule and combines different forms of iron with lactoferrin. It is suitable for people in whom an iron requirement has been confirmed; iron supplements should not be taken long term on suspicion.

How do you take Biogena QuattroFerrin®21 and which intervals are important?

Follow the specific recommended intake on the packaging and, most simply, take the iron capsule with a large glass of water. Coffee, black or green tea, as well as calcium supplements or very calcium-rich meals, should be taken at a separate time rather than directly with the capsule.

Why should you have ferritin and iron values checked before and during intake?

Ferritin is a commonly used laboratory value for assessing iron stores; depending on the situation, additional values are also considered. Before intake, it is useful to determine iron values, and after an agreed supplementation period it can be checked again whether the supply fits your situation.

If you would like to discuss your iron supply, ferritin values and intake routine personally, we will be happy to support you at the Centre for Prevention and Nutrition in Berlin. Request counselling
