Mounjaro (Tirzepatide) – Breakthrough or Overhyped Wonder Drug?

Mounjaro – Informationen und Ernährungsberatung

In recent years, so-called incretin-based injections have received considerable media attention. The name Mounjaro® (active substance: tirzepatide) is mentioned particularly often.

In public discussion, this often creates the impression of a “miracle drug”.

At the Center for Prevention and Nutrition in Berlin-Moabit, we view such developments in a differentiated way and on the basis of scientific evidence.

What is Mounjaro (tirzepatide)?

Tirzepatide is an injectable active substance that was originally developed in a medical professional context for people with type 2 diabetes.

It belongs to the group of dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonists and is prescribed and monitored by a physician.

• Classified as a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist
• Use only after medical prescription
• Medical follow-up monitoring
• Possible undesirable accompanying effects

Tirzepatide is now being studied and used in certain medical indications.

What is known from clinical investigations?

The clinical studies of the SURPASS and SURMOUNT programs investigate tirzepatide compared with placebo in defined patient groups.

The SURMOUNT-1 study investigated different dosages over 72 weeks in adults according to specified inclusion criteria (Jastreboff et al., 2022).

Study publication

Further study publication on tirzepatide in a medical context (Frias et al., 2021)

The publications describe tirzepatide as a prescription-only active substance whose use must be assessed medically.

Is it a “miracle drug”?

Media coverage often suggests a simple solution to complex metabolic problems.

From a professional perspective, tirzepatide is a prescription-only active substance – but not a substitute for comprehensive support.

Several aspects need to be considered:

• Discontinuing therapy may be associated with weight gain
• Long-term data over several years are limited
• Side effects such as gastrointestinal complaints are common
• Drug therapy does not replace structural lifestyle change

When body weight is significantly elevated, several factors often interact. Medically prescribed medicines can be incorporated into an overall concept, but they do not replace a sustainable strategy.

Body composition instead of weight alone

A key point in the discussion:

Weight reduction does not automatically mean optimal body composition.

When body weight changes, muscle mass as well as fat mass must be taken into account. Maintaining muscle mass is, however, central to metabolic stability.

For accompanying micronutrient supply, for example, Omega 3 forte 700 may be considered: It provides 700 mg EPA and DHA per capsule; EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg EPA and DHA. Food supplements are not a substitute for a balanced, varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. The stated recommended daily intake must not be exceeded.

At the Center for Prevention and Nutrition in Berlin-Moabit, the focus is therefore not solely on body weight, but on the differentiated analysis of body composition over time.

When can a medical assessment be important?

A medical assessment can be important in certain situations, particularly:

• In cases of significantly increased body weight and additional health factors
• When previous nutrition and exercise measures are not sufficient
• As part of structured medical care

The decision is made individually and on medical grounds.

The Center for Prevention and Nutrition does not prescribe medicines, but offers structured preventive support as a supplement to medical care.

Conclusion

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not a “miracle drug”, but a prescription-only medicinal product whose use must be assessed by a physician.

Long-term metabolic stability, however, requires:

• Structured support
• Follow-up monitoring
• Differentiated consideration of body composition
• Sustainable adjustment of lifestyle factors

Medicines can be part of an overall medical concept – but they do not replace a structured prevention strategy.

As a complementary herbal formulation during structured lifestyle adjustments, Ashwagandha Fusion Complete may be considered: It combines KSM-66® ashwagandha root extract with other selected plant extracts.
